"Do I post my Glam Shot captured by @nyavgjoe one of the best street style photographers in the game? ...Or the picture of my smashed iphone, with golden eye shadow spilled all over my denim jacket, wiping the sweat off of my face, after running 8 blocks in 90 degree weather for DVF's AOL Build Screening...?"
MY #SOCIAL STORY
3 YEARS AGO I MOVED TO LOS ANGELES AFTER MY FRESHMAN YEAR AT VANDERBILT, AND FELL IN LOVE WITH THE ART OF SOCIAL STORYTELLING. WHAT BEGAN AS A RIDICULOUS HOBBY PHOTOGRAPHING LATTES, HANGING HEADPHONES ON MOUNTAINS, AND CREATING UNIQUE VIGNETTES OF PRODUCTS, EVOLVED INTO A LIFESTYLE. I BECAME ADDICTED TO THE ART OF VISUAL IMAGERY and capturing the #truelife of #livinlikelarz. this idea transcended beyond my own personal story, and i began craftING micro STORIES for BRANDs, FOODS, AND FASHION ON my BLOG (LIVINLIKELARZ) & INSTAGRAM.
3 Years later i found myself at new york york fashion week SHARING my stories to over 1 million followers on the aol and lookbook instagram platforms. suddenly it hit me that the dream i once had, was now at my fingertips. i was able to make not one impression, but over 5 million impressions within the course of 5 days.
there are two sides to every story.
#NYFW GOT ME THINKING... IT WAS A TIME OF REFLECTION, CONFUSION, AND SOUL SEARCHING. HOW DID I GET HERE? HOW DID I GET SO LUCKY?
AND THEN I HAD A LITTLE #TBT MOMENT...
WHEN when i began to break into the industry, i spent hours taking mentors, influencers, and artists to coffee, in hopes to learn the "secret" to success. although each story was drastically different, almost every individual, without fail would tell me..."my life isn't as glamorous as it looks..."
IT WAS IN THIS MOMENT THAT I PULLED OUT MY PHONE TO ANALYZE MY #SOCIALSTORY
I SCROLLED THROUGH MY INSTAGRAM FEED, AND REALIZED I WAS GUILTY. I DIDN'T SHOW THE OTHER #HALFTHESTORY. THE 17 HOUR WORK DAYS, SKYPE SESSIONS INTO CLASS, RUNNING DOWN BROADWAY WHILE SHOVING A WRAP DOWN MY THROAT, MISSING DEADLINES, RACING BETWEEN EVENTS, GETTING LOST ON THE SUBWAY, AND WIPING SWEAT OFF MY FACE BEFORE SITTING IN FRONT OF DVF. THESE MOMENTS WERE THE TRUTH. THE VULNERABLE HUMAN MOMENTS THAT WE ALL SHARE. WHICH LED ME TO BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF TRANSPARENCY AND TRUTH...
THE OTHER #HALFTHESTORY.
